How Direct Primary Care Works

A Direct Relationship Between You and Your Physician

Direct Primary Care, often called DPC, is a membership-based approach to primary care.

Instead of billing insurance for services provided within the practice, Blue Ocean works directly with its patients. Members pay a monthly fee that covers their routine primary care and provides greater access to their physician.

Removing insurance billing from the everyday physician-patient relationship allows Blue Ocean to care for fewer patients and spend more time caring for each one.

Become a Member

Choose an individual or family membership and complete your enrollment with Blue Ocean Family Medicine. Membership is month-to-month, so you’re not locked into a long-term contract.

Start With an Extended First Visit

Your first appointment is scheduled for approximately one hour. We’ll review your health history, discuss current concerns, establish your goals, and begin developing a care plan based on your individual needs. New members are also introduced to the different ways they can communicate with the practice and receive a complimentary initial OMT session.

Make Blue Ocean Your First Call

Once you’re a member, Blue Ocean becomes your first point of contact for most healthcare concerns. Feeling sick? Managing an ongoing condition? Noticed something unusual on your skin? Have a question about your child’s health? Wondering whether something requires an appointment? Reach out. Because your physician already knows you and your health history, many concerns can be addressed more efficiently and with better context.

Receive More Care in One Office

Blue Ocean provides comprehensive family medicine for children and adults. In addition to preventive, acute, and chronic disease care, we provide Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, skin procedures, joint and muscle treatments, laboratory testing, minor procedures, medications, and more. Our goal is to address as many of your healthcare needs as appropriately possible without automatically sending you to another provider.

Use Insurance When You Need It

Direct Primary Care does not replace health insurance. Blue Ocean does not bill insurance for care provided within our office, but your insurance can still be used for outside medical expenses such as specialist care, hospitalizations, emergency care, advanced imaging, surgery, and prescriptions. When outside care is necessary, we can help you determine the appropriate next step.
Direct Primary Care + Health Insurance

If I Have Insurance, Why Would I Also Pay for a Membership?

Health insurance and Direct Primary Care serve different purposes.

Insurance can help protect you financially from larger or unexpected healthcare expenses. Your Blue Ocean membership is designed around the healthcare you are much more likely to use regularly.
Think about the difference between needing coverage for a hospitalization and waking up with a child who has an earache.

With a traditional insurance-based practice, everyday care may still involve copays, limited appointment availability, short visits, and difficulty reaching your physician.

With Blue Ocean, your membership gives you an established physician who knows your family and is easier to reach when everyday health concerns arise.

Your Membership Helps Cover:

  • Primary care
  • Preventive care
  • Sick visits
  • Chronic disease management
  • Longer appointments
  • Direct physician access
  • Many routine diagnostics and physicals

Insurance Can Still Cover:

  • Emergency care
  • Hospitalization
  • Specialist care
  • Surgery
  • Advanced imaging
  • Outside procedures
  • Other major medical expenses
You don’t have to choose between having health insurance and having a Direct Primary Care physician.
Primary Care Without a Copay Barrierb

Get Something Checked Before It Becomes Something Bigger

Traditional healthcare can unintentionally encourage people to wait.
Maybe you don’t want another copay. Maybe getting an appointment is difficult. Maybe the concern doesn’t seem serious enough to justify taking time away from work.

Direct Primary Care changes that dynamic.
Because your routine visits are already included in membership, there is less reason to put off a question, concern, or symptom simply because you’re worried about another office visit charge.

That creates an environment where healthcare can become more preventive and less reactive.

Instead of waiting until something becomes urgent, you have an established physician you can reach out to earlier.
